Winter Is Coming…Protect Your Dogs ! Winter is coming…prepare for it. If
you have dogs outside, be sure they are ready for winter. Winter can be
hard on your dogs and pups. Below is tips for your outside dogs…

1. Be sure the dog house is not too big. If the dog house is too large, the
dog cannot generate enough body heat to keep warm. The door on the dog
house should only be large enough for dog to enter and exit.

2. Be sure the back of the dog house is toward the north to keep the north
wind out of the house. Also, be sure to break the ice in the water bucket
twice daily if frozen.

3. Use hay for bedding…plenty of hay so that he/she can bury up in it.
Have a small board at the bottom of the doorway to keep the hay inside.

4. Pick up dog house…set on tarp…wrap the tarp around house and tie at
top. Leave opening at door for dog to go in and out (insulates house ,
keeps moisture out).

5. Build wind break on north side of house. It protects from north wind and
reflects southern sunlight to warm dog on cold mornings. Put dogs on
south side of house (windbreak and warmer). Screw large eye bolt into wall
to fasten dog.

6. When possible bring dogs inside. Outside mothers and larger pups need
a 3x3x3 dog house with heat bulb. Fasten light fixture so dogs cannot tear
it down. Get electric cord out of their reach.

7. Birthing mother must come inside. Build a whelping box with a bulb
mounted on top side. For medium size dogs the box should be 32x32x24
inches high. Mount the heat bulb (100-150 watt inside) in the corner, in the
back of the box. If the pups get cold they can go near the bulb. If they get to
hot they can get away from the bulb. If the pups are crying, they may be too
hot, or too cold…they will let you know. The whelping box needs to be 80
degrees to keep the newborns body temperature 98 or above. If the
newborn pups body temperature drops below 98 puppy herpes sets in and
they die a slow death. Those that survive could be sterile as adults. Do not
use wood chips for bedding for pups. They can choke on them and the
chips cause sores on some breeds of pups. Contact IBDR for other
valuable information on puppy/dog care.

The Whelping Box

Whelping Box:  Build the box 32 x 32 x 24 high for a medium size dog. 8
inch high board across bottom of front of box to keep puppies in box (front
is open). Build the whelping box out of ¾ plywood and fasten together with
2 inch screws.

Cut circle in right back corner on top to mount light. Cut hole just smaller
than silver light fixture and mount with small screws. Light is mounted on
outside of box so that den mother don’t hit the light. Mount light in corner
so that puppies can get closer to light or away from light if need be.

Newborns need more heat while they are wet.  You might hang something
over the doorway to keep puppies warm during delivery.
If pups get too cold…they will cry…if they get too warm they will cry. Inside
we use either a 100 or 150 watt bulb. Use 100
if house is 70-72 degrees. Do not get them too hot.

Cut carpet squares to absorb the moisture during delivery. If carpet gets
too wet or too cold put in a new dry piece of carpet. Be sure put in a new,
dry carpet after birthing process.

Do not use wood chips… wood chips will get in pups mouth…mothers
cleaning pups digest wood chips while cleaning pups…wood chips cause
sores on pups. If you use old clothing for bedding be sure pups don’t crawl
up in a shirt sleeve and mom lay on it. Use carpet!
